The Lord is my light and my salvation-whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life-of whom shall I be afraid?
In the world of sports fearlessness is an aspect that is preached from the lowest level. Coaches teach their youth to do their best and not to fear their opponents. However, the concept is not just a sports concept, but it applies to any battle you will face in your life. The military is notorious for producing fearless leaders, at any moment their lives could be at risk. Many notorious military leaders have gained notoriety for their “fearless” behavior. During the Battle of Mobile Bay, Admiral David Farragut’s vessel was under fire, but Farragut chose not to retreat, but rather uttered his notorious order of fearlessness, “”D### the torpedoes, full speed ahead!” The fearless approach led to the US’s victory during this battle. We as Christians shall not fear because God is our light and our salvation, and there is nothing we cannot do through him. However, far too often we see the danger ahead and retreat.
One of the most fearless athletes of all-time was the Chicago Bears Dick Butkus. Butkus had a demeanor that his opponents feared. Many quarterbacks looked up before taking a snap to see the cold stare of Dick Butkus. Butkus was one of many who put the black and blue in the black and blue division. He was ferocious and talented. His relentless attitude earned his Chicago Bears the reputation as one of the toughest defenses in all of football. The simple mention of his name could bring chills to an opposing team. The fearless, hard-nosed defender destroyed numerous psyches and destroyed opposing teams backfields. Butkus played the game without fear, or what might happen. When he saw someone with the ball he took action. He simply played the game how it was supposed to be played and that was to do what was best for his team. He played hard and played as if there was no other threats to him on that field. This is the way we should live our lives as Christians, conquer things as if there is no threat to our lives. No matter what the hurdle, not matter how big the opponent God can conquer all. God will not give us challenges we can not handle. He will not put us in a position we are not made for. While this does not guarantee we will inherit perfect lives, we must always put our faith in him. We must put faith in his plans to us. Like Dick Butkus had the confidence he was going to prevent any opposing offensive player from getting past him, we need to have the confidence God will prevent us enduring anything we can not handle. Dick Butkus played like he feared no one, much like we should not fear our advisories. God has a plan for us all and he will get us there is we simply follow him and honor him.
Let us always have the faith in you not fear. We know fear is not from you and that you are the only thing we should truly fear. We know that through you all things are possible. You are our light and salvation. You are the giver of life, and we thank you for your many blessings.
This we pray in Jesus Name, Amen.
