“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”
Oh beautiful day, for this is the day the Lord has made let us rejoice and be glad. God has given us a gift and that gift is the Earth. It’s our home, it’s our habitat and our source of life. It’s full of adventure, beauty, and life. When God created the Earth He put us in charge of this planet and expects us to take care of His creation. Today I see many people come out as climate change skeptics. I can tell you this ignorance of the environment is ridiculous. If you think that ignoring the environment will bring Jesus any sooner you are a fool. Contrary to the popular books Left Behind, which are fictional books, displaying a fiction enactment of a real event that will happen in the future. They are great reads, and they have great value, but no Christian or any believe thereof should be taking these wonderful books as fact. This was not their purpose, while they were to raise awareness about the apocalypse, they were never meant to be fact. So on that note, there is nothing in the scripture that says we won’t suffer before joining our Lord in heaven.
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything … Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love Him”
So at this rate, we will be dealing with the apocalypse in extreme weather conditions, and that just sounds fun. Harsh winters, hotter summers, and random weather condition. Some trials are inevitable and we will all face them like death, loss, pain, but climate change is not one of them. We can prevent this. I’m not posting the verse from James to say we will be better if we suffer from climate change, but to point out we will suffer. We will not be better if we suffer from climate change because that means as a human race we were lazy. Too lazy to care about something else. Too lazy to care about God’s creation which includes the waters, sky, land, and animals. We cannot continue to be Christians and proclaim that we love God and destroy his creation. Is much like a kid who tells his parents everyday “Mommy, Daddy, I love you.” However, the next day throws a baseball through the T.V., but its OK, because he loves them. A few days later he keys the car, and flattens the tires. As the month goes on he cuts down a tree which collides with the house. He then shoots his mother in the leg with a BB gun, but this is all OK because he loves them. I know my example is slightly extreme, but we cannot continue to wear the label Christian and not respect God’s creation. He did not give us this wonderful planet to destroy.
Folks, the verse Genesis are abundantly clear, God put man here to work to to care for the Earth. So next time you want to think about buying that gas guzzling vehicle because fuel prices are going down, think again. Next time you get enraged about the government closing down the coal industry, think again. While these coal jobs are being lost, renewable energy and natural gas jobs are being created. When you hear about the polar regions, melting and think it’s not my problem, it is your problem. It is all our problems. We can continue to sit by and do nothing, but if the polar regions continue to melt, and countless wildlife is lost. If the regions melt massive flooding will occur, which could in term lead to mass extinction. That extinction means humans too. Pope Francis has been very vocal on the matter of climate change, he stated numerous times it is our job as Christians to preserve the Earth.
“…So many forests, all cut, that have become land. That can no longer give life. This is our sin, exploiting the Earth and not allowing her to give us what she has within her.”
Deforestation has become a major issue. Plant not only provide beauty, but also stabilizes the ecosystem, allow wildlife to remain in the wild, and most importantly filters carbon to release oxygen. We are cutting down trees and forest for our benefit, but we are not restoring the plants we removed. This is allowing carbon to escape at a faster rate, causing the ozone layer to develop a hole. The hole is taking away the natural protection, we receive. The Pope continues to speak on the matter stating,
“Man has slapped the Earth in the face.”
He is right, we are taking away what is beautiful for our own benefit, but we are doing ourselves a disservice. Not only do we take away such beauty, but we make the planet more dangerous to ourselves, and the plants and animals around us. The fact there are Christians who deny climate change makes Christians appear stupid, which is a major gap for evangelism. We will not be able to bring my generation into the church if we continue to ignore the environment. This is not some propaganda, it is again common sense, but some people out there do not have that. Current Republican Nominee has already appointed a Climate Change skeptic to oversee energy in this nation. We don’t need to keep outdated sources of energy, we need wind turbines, and other natural sources. They have solar powered roads now. Now days there is fully electric, hybrid, fuel efficiency, and alternative fuel cars which do not look unappealing, and there are just some of the ways to limit your energy usage. Most appliances have an energy star sticker on them, these are ones you should buy because they will lower your power bill. Everyone likes to save money, even if it just comes down to putting florescent bulbs in your house. Every little step helps. “Let us protect with love all that has given us!” -Pope Francis, Mar. 2013 We are facing an epidemic here, and we need to fix it. We need to correct our eyes, our hearts, and out minds to fix this problem. Its not a matter of should we its a matter of we need to. We need to stop being lazy, and stop being ignorant to reality.
