“You and I are told we must choose between a left or right, but I suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down. Up to man’s age-old dream – the maximum of individual freedom consistent with law and order – or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism.”
We currently sit in one of the most politicized periods in our nations history. Left and right define us, and many times we are looking past what matters, the greater good of this nation. I am a left leaning man, but that doesn’t mean I oppose good policy when it happens. It doesn’t matter whether your left or right, if something is good for the country then lets do it. There should not be one side of each issue that every party universally sticks to. Where are the people of courage? Washington, primarily congress has become a Miranda Lambert song.
So let’s shake hands and reach across those party lines
You’ve got your friends just like I’ve got mine
We might think a little differently
But we got a lot in common you will see
We’re just like you
No one is shaking hands across the party line now days, thee seems to be such a divide. Certain congressional sessions have turned into childish displays. Never has there been a president who has done so much, but received so much opposition from the other side. It gets to a point where its overdoing it. Everyone has ideological differences. Why are we not uniting, and now we have a monster on our hands. We have the Trump monster knocking on the door and we are scrambling.
Where did our leaders go? I firmly believe President Obama is doing a wonderful job, but he can not do this alone, there are a number of wonderful politicians, but how can we succeed without support.
So at the top I posted a portion of one of Ronald Reagan’s speeches, its from one of his most famous ones, most of you remember “We must fight”, but probably don’t remember this portion of it. It’s cool, I’m a Poly-Sci geek, it happens, I’m used to it people don’t get the quotes I am referencing. Mr. Reagan is right though, we should not be defined by our political ideology, but rather by the actions we take towards making a better America. If we believe and know some things are better for this country and we continue to support the opposition because its the political party we support we are part of the problem. While you are a democrat that doesn’t mean you as a Christian should support abortion. Just because you are a republican doesn’t mean as a Christian you should stand for corporate greed. We are Democrats and Republicans, but we are also American over that, and believers most importantly. There no need to get overly partisan, the greater good is the greater good. How does make sense to cut public services to the needy? How does it make sense to support bills that destroy the environment? How does it make sense to support a $15 mimimum wage for ALL jobs? How does it make sense to vote with your party not your beliefs? It doesn’t, all of thses situations it doesn’t make sense. Party lines were drawn because of balance not to be a set in stone we are always right. We are supposed to have disagreements, but eventually find a happy medium. This is not happening and while things under the Obama administration have been improving, they could be better. If partisan issues would not have interefered in many manners the growth we have seen in the past 8 years could have been greater.
When you enter the ballot box this coming November do your research. You are not confined to left or right. You can vote for whoever you want, but don’t vote for on candidate because they have the (D) or (R) next to their name, vote for them because thats who you believe in, find a candidate which will fight for you, fight for your country, and efend your beliefs. Don’t be afraid to fight for your country.
